As an editorial strategist, my job is to see the whole picture of your writing.
Where it’s come from, where it is, where it’s going — and where it has unexplored potential. This means I’m watching out for the overall health of your writing and your well-being as a writer. Part of my job is to listen and observe, to offer gentle coaching and to identify when there are tools missing.
As an editorial strategist, I’m led by experience, intuition and intention. I want to dive into the heart of the story put in front of me — and I want the wisdom from data and online writing strategies to help that story come into the world.
In every piece of writing, I’m holding room for the message, the writer and the delivery.
Message: When I see a piece of writing, I start by identifying the theme or the hook. What is this writer saying that no one else can? Is it done convincingly? Is there something missing? What is the potential connection point between the writer and reader relationship? (Hint: sometimes there isn’t one! But I am watching for it no matter what!)
Writer: In relationship with a writer, I have my eyes on resources they may need. Sometimes they are emotional, sometimes they are practical. Sometimes a writer needs help with exploring biases and strengths. Most of the time, writers bury the gold in their first drafts, and it’s my job to pull that to the surface so readers have the best chance of staying engaged.
Delivery: Here I’m looking for timing, pacing and how we can weave other threads of the writer’s work into a piece. I’m watching for layout and formatting barriers and fixing those as necessary. I’m also thinking about how visuals could add (or detract) from the piece’s delivery. There’s also a layer of SEO insights I offer, but always with a gentle hand and never to overpower the voice of a piece.
How I help DIY writers with their newsletters
In my work with The Editing Spectrum, I’m constantly exploring new ways to bring writing guidance, insights and tools outside the usual one-on-one paradigm between editorial strategist and writer. You can learn more about my 🌙 paid membership here. It’s really important to me that my newsletter and workshop library are places where the very best of strategic and writing insights are shared in accessible formats and reasonable prices (all my workshops are less than $50; paid members get early access, usually for $15 or $20).
I work with creative entrepreneurs
If Substack is an extension of your current business structure, I’d love to help you behind the scenes by using data-driven reader insights and editorial strategies to set you on a good path. Here are some of the ways that I offer one-on-one support.
Editorial Coaching Call
My 1-hour Editorial Coaching Call offers one-on-one support to help you refine your writing plan, sharpen your editorial strategy, uncover key reader behaviors and find your pricing sweet spot. Come prepared with what’s time of mind for you, and we’ll dive straight into your goals and challenges. You’ll walk away with clear, actionable insights. Each session is recorded, so you can revisit the advice anytime. I offer five openings each month—book yours to get focused, strategic feedback from a seasoned creative entrepreneur.
Editorial Strategy Report
The Editorial Strategy Report is your go-to resource for focused, actionable guidance on your newsletter. If you're looking to refine your approach without a full-scale audit, this report offers a personalized roadmap to help you align your newsletter with your creative goals and reader engagement. We’ll highlight your strongest writing ideas, suggest practical improvements and provide a simple newsletter planning template tailored to your needs. It’s a strategic boost designed to give you clarity and direction, so you can confidently take the next steps in your newsletter journey. These cost $250. Read more about them here.
Editorial Audit
An Editorial Audit is a deep dive into the newsletter experience you’re offering to your readers — we’ll look at what you publish, how you paywall your writing (or not) and your overall strategy. It’s best used during a newsletter “life event,” such as:
when things feel stuck;
when a creative entrepreneur feels uninspired; or
when a creative entrepreneur is ready to define and launch a paid offering.
Together, we’ll analyze what’s working, identify areas to modify your publishing rhythms and create a plan that aligns with both your creative goals and your audience’s needs. This isn’t just about making tweaks; it’s about understanding the full picture of your newsletter and ensuring every piece fits together to support your long-term vision. These start at $500. You can learn more about editorial audits on my website here.
